Tablecloth Hack For Outdoor Entertaining

DIY Outdoor Tablecloth Weights

I know you have experienced this before…the table is all set up outside for your event. The centerpieces look perfect, the food is ready to go, drink stations are stocked and gorgeous, then…whoosh…Cue the wind! And all your picture perfect table settings fly around, table cloth edges and corners start blowing and flopping in the wind. (And yes, I am speaking from personal experience!)

So, I have tried discreetly taping the tablecloths to my tables, tablecloth clips, heavier tablecloths, you name it, I have tried it!

For my son’s graduation party, we had to celebrate outdoors due to Covid. We spaced the tables and chairs, and much like his graduation ceremony, everything seemed oddly spaced out but it worked.

This is what a “Covid” High School Graduation ceremony looks like, by the way. So strange!

His party color scheme was black and gold with royal blue and orange accents. I had come across some tablecloth weights and decided to DIY the project to fit our party decor.

Here is what you will need for your project:

1. Small clamps with a loop or hook (see pictures below of the type I found on Amazon). I could have selected these in white, black, and a gold finish. I am sure there are other options, too, if you search.

2. Decorative objects that are Heavy– see the chandelier crystals I found on Amazon in a multi-color pack. For this, it can be any object with a loop, eye-hook, or a shape that can accommodate an o-ring, wire, etc. to secure it to the clamp. There were also many options in a silver tone, glass, metal finishes, to name a few. Use your imagination here!

3. Additional o-rings and/or chains are optional.

4. A pair of pliers or needle nose pliers.

Tool Needed: Pliers or Needle Nose Pliers

This project has a lot of room for creativity as customization but for the sake of instruction, here is what I did for my tablecloth weights.

First step, slide one, two, or three of the crystals onto the open hook of the clamp. Quick Tip: if you would like, you could add chain to the clamp’s hook first then the crystals to the end of the chain. This would provide a dramatic dangling effect.

Next step, you will close the hook’s opening, with the crystals still on the hook, completely using the pliers. This will prevent the crystals from simply sliding off the mini clamp hooks into the grass. See photo below for examples.
